Look at these wonderful appliqued wall hangings done by women living in the hills. My bags are getting so heavy I have to settle for photographs only.The large applique is a village scene and there are hundreds of little people appliqued on it carrying out their daily chores....Next time!

Varkala
Tesy Dolby, who has been living in India for six years now has devised her own suitable outfit using the most wonderful fabrics and colour combos. Tess always has the scarf too.

Despite lessons from Rosey of Malayolam Resort I am not sure I would last long in a sari. I noticed women working on a building site wearing saris.

In March, Warren and I set off for India. Every village, town and city has wonderful markets where the most colourful array of fabrics are on offer.
Most women wear Saris and it is a very serious business when purchasing new ones. Every celebration or festival calls for women to go out and treat themselves to a new outfuit. The selection is unbelievable

Singapore
The well known Mustafa's departmental store in Singapore sells everything imaginable. Down in the basement it has a wonderful selection of fabrics. In a corner tucked away, one can find a few interesting cottons. />The department is a rainbow of colours and designs.

This wonderful patchwork shop owned by Ira Joseph is a favourite haunt of mine. Ira is a charming person and welcomes everyone , even those who are just looking around.
Ira runs classes in the shop and her speciality which she likes to teach is hand applique.

While waiting at the local bustop I do like to chat to the local ladies wearing their "tudongs."

Moira' and Nick's quit.l
While In K.L. I wanted to make a quilt for Nick and Moira. I used some of the lovely "Malaysian" fabrics Moira had bought for me and supplemented with some I had bought . As we are doing lots of travelling,and using K.L. as our base, the pattern I used is an old favourite of mine," Around the world ".

This little quilt was made for Baby Molly using fabrics bought in Kualu Lumpur. They are so bright and cheerful. On the back Diana used checks,spots and little English floral pieces. This side gets my vote.

Diana made this lovely quilt using fabrics she bought in Malaysia. Some of the fabrics you buy in Malaysia are from there or from Indonesia. They are designed to wear as wrap arounds so the patterns change. When I get back to base I will show you what I mean.

I can't resist showing off these delightful little elephant prints and there are lions too. Can you imagine how delightful the quilts are going to be?

When in Bali our favourite thing to do is snorkeling. We have found the most amazing spot in Ahmed where you snorkel above a Japanese ship wreck. The fish we saw swimming around were so beautiful and it was all the more exciting because of the ship wreck.

Aren't these little gheckos too cute. They look so cheerful with their curly tails and big eyes. In South Africa we have them crawling all over and actually they are quite shy as they prefer to hide behind curtains and pictures.

How can one ever feel sad or gloomy when you see such cheerful designs and colours. The fabrics wash well and keep their colours. The shop to visit is in Denpassar in Bali and is a long narrow shop with the most wonderful range imaginable.
My daughter-in-law Diana, is also a quilter and she bought this range to make up into children's quilts for her and her friends.

I love fabric. The colours, the feel, the designs. When I see interesting
fabric I have a deep urge to touch it and my mind begins to think of the different things I could make. I want to own all of it too and win the competition for the one who dies owning the most!!
As this is not always possible or reasonable I have taken to photographing fabrics and will now share them and my thoughts on my blog.
I am hoping that through this blog I will meet like minded souls and will be ble to share sentiments with them. Please join me in my journey through Fabric World.

These beautiful prints come from Bali and cost about R10 (rand) per m. The colours and designs are so lovely.
These fabrics depict flowers and butterflies which is so typical of Bali. Every evening the women on the island dress in their pretty sarongs and put flowers in their hair as they prepare to place their offerings on their holy places and burn incensce.
